Keep Acne at Bay with Tips from Dermatologist

One of the worst nightmares for a teenager apart from the ultimate rejection from a crush is to find out that one of those ugly zits popping up every time some important event comes up. Be it a date, a prom, or one’s graduation ceremony, this blitzkrieg attack has to stop. But how do we tackle an enemy that’s an expert in this kind of onslaught?

Procuring knowledge about the enemy helps.  So let’s get to the basics and review some of the things that’ll help us sail safely to the other side, to clear porcelain skin!

One of the major triggers is the accumulation of dirt and subsequent clogging of the pores. When the skin is inflamed in this manner it’s just short of exploding with infection that the bacterium causes.
A mild form of acne that prevails even among the adult is in the form of white and blackheads. The scar leaving acne is the infamous cystic lesions; these are large deep pimples. These lesions are often painful and leave scars on one’s skin. Following these simple rules will help us to ward of the acne spell.

Firstly, avoid spicy food.
Spicy foods with generous amounts of tomatoes and peppers, which contain acidic lycopene, can be an irritant for some skin types; throwing off their skin’s pH levels and triggering breakouts. However, it isn’t just spicy foods that can irritate your skin. Some skin types have an aversion to other kinds of foods — for some it might be lactose rich food (dairy products) , hence how one’s skin reacts to food depends on one’s own personal skin combination.

One of common mistakes made by those who suffer from the consistent problem of acne is to conceal the agitated skin in order to look presentable. This act of using excessive products or products that don’t suit one’s facial skin can also play the trigger to this annoying phenomenon of acne. Using the correct or minimal makeup relieves one of much trouble. Mineral oil, a common ingredient found in lotions is known to clog your pores and agitate break outs.

Inspect the hair products that one uses, constant changes or incompatible range of conditioners or leave-ins may trigger acne around the hairline. These can also leave scars.

Since the situation is pretty delicate, one does tend to overdo the whole skin care routine. Excessive facial scrubbing causes the pores to get inflamed. The active bacterium spreads to the other areas, making the skin susceptible to further acne. So keep the scrubbing as minimal as possible. Follow one basic rule- ‘Don’t touch the face’; this helps in reducing the damage.

Cut down on the sugar consumption. Excessive intake of sugar on a daily basis not only aggravates the acne but also causes the skin to age sooner than usual. Reducing the intake can do miracles to the way one’s skin feels. If one consumes them frequently it increases hormones that stimulate sebum production. Sugar’s oxidative properties are known to provoke acne and breakouts. Sugar and foods high on the glycemic index lead to a burst of inflammation.

Lastly, let’s not forget the big S- Stress. Yes, that’s true. Half of the ailments are triggered by the lifestyle changes and one of the major contributors is the stress one experiences at work or in one’s personal lives. De-cluttering life and simplifying things works wonders for the hormone system. Giving them (hormones) the jitters is one of the main reasons why 1 in 5 is said to suffer from PCOD.  Engaging in an active workout routine helps ease out a little thus, giving the body the ability to cope with stress.

Teen years are hard enough, let acne not rain on your parade. Hope these pointers help in stalling the enemy. Till then wish you all clear skin!
